About TellJar

Anonymous cards, clear rules

TellJar is designed as a simple place to ask questions and get perspective. This page explains what comes from users, what is created by the service and how transparency is protected.

What TellJar is

TellJar is a service for describing everyday problems, questions and experiences anonymously and for reading other people's replies. It is not a catalogue of instant diagnoses and it is not designed to let a few sentences decide somebody's life. The product is built around two useful actions: describing a situation more clearly and seeing it from more than one perspective.

That is why TellJar also publishes its own practical guides. They cover separating facts from interpretations, asking focused questions, replying without attacking the author and recognising situations in which anonymous internet advice is not enough.

Where cards come from

TellJar clearly distinguishes two sources. Community cards are submitted by users and may be moderated before they become public. Starter cards are examples prepared by TellJar so the jar is usable before the community has supplied enough material and so visitors can test the product. Starter cards are labelled in the interface and are not presented as statements written by real users.

Transparency: the available-card counter can include labelled starter cards. We do not present that number as proof of community activity.

What anonymity means

Anonymity refers to the public separation between a card and the author's optional profile. Users should still avoid names, phone numbers, exact addresses, schools, employers and other details that could identify themselves or somebody else. Public profiles are optional and are kept separate from anonymous cards.

How reply quality is protected

A useful reply should address the actual situation, avoid attacking the author and avoid pretending to be a professional diagnosis. Reporting and moderation are used to reduce spam, harassment, dangerous content and attempts to expose personal information. A disagreement is not automatically a violation, but threats, targeted harassment, prohibited sexual content, encouragement of self-harm and disclosure of third-party personal data should not enter the public conversation.

Editorial content and user content

The guides under “Problems” and “Guides” are publisher-created TellJar materials. They are intended to be useful even when a visitor never draws a card. User submissions are a separate part of the service and can contain personal opinions, experiences or questions that TellJar does not necessarily endorse.

Advertising, support and independence

TellJar may be funded through advertising and voluntary support. A payment does not buy a favourable moderation decision and does not make one opinion the “correct” answer. Accounts with the relevant entitlement can use an ad-free mode. Ads should not cover navigation or force a visitor to click an ad in order to continue.

Our approach: nothing by force

TellJar is built on a simple belief that comes from experience: nothing is worth forcing. Not a relationship, not a career, not a conversation the other person is not ready for. Good things usually grow at their own pace, and what is forced rarely lasts. That is why we do not promise quick fixes, and why our guides aim to give you one concrete, doable step rather than a promise of instant change.

We also do not chase money at any cost. The service is meant to be useful and honest: ads must not cover the content, support is voluntary and buys nothing in moderation, and new material is written to help people, not to catch search phrases. At the same time, we believe it is worth trying to be better, step by step, with kindness toward yourself and the courage to admit a mistake and fix it. We treat TellJar the same way: we improve it regularly, one step at a time.
